Hello Parents!!
Welcome to the new school year at Hornedo Middle. My name is Elissa Hughes and I will be teaching 8th grade science in Science Lab Sc-7. This is my third year teaching at Hornedo, and I am a former tornado myself. I went to the “old” Hornedo before graduating from Franklin High School in 2007. I am a proud Westside girl.
This year will bring new adventures and opportunities for not only your children but for me as well. I can’t wait to get started. This year I will have four Regular eighth grade classes and one eighth grade Pre-AP class. I have previously taught both of the lower grade levels which means I have an accurate knowledge of what each student should have learned in sixth and seventh grade.
Eighth grade is essentially integrated Physics and Chemistry. It is also during 8th grade that the students will have a field trip to the Gene Roddenberry Planetarium and the dreaded Science STAAR Exam. I know that lots of students stress about these standardized tests, but Hornedo has the best scores in the entire district and your children will be prepared.
Tutoring will be available in my classroom two times a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) after school until 4pm, and my door is always open by 7am before school every day. Should your child require extra help, I am more than willing to find time in my schedule to help them.
Please feel free to email me at any time with your questions or concerns. I encourage each of you to take an active role in your child’s education, if you can.
I think this will be a really great year and I am very proud and excited to be teaching your child.
Regards,
Elissa Hughes
